How to Choose a Nā Pali Coast Boat Tour on Kauai

The Nā Pali Coast is a place where the departure point can shape the whole day. Tours leave from Hanalei on Kauaʻi’s North Shore or from Port Allen on the South Shore. The trips also vary in length and boat style, from a four-hour raft excursion to a longer catamaran cruise with meals and snorkeling.

Start by matching the departure point to where you will be staying. The Kauaʻi hub lists several ways to explore the coast. Here is what to consider when choosing among them.

Staying on the North Shore? Look at Hanalei departures

The Morning Nā Pali Adventure Tour is a four-hour trip from Hanalei Bay aboard a 40-foot rigid-hulled inflatable. The tour combines coastal sightseeing, sea cave exploration when conditions allow, a snorkeling stop, and lunch. Its smaller, nimble vessel is designed to get close to the coastline, and the operator describes the Hanalei departure as giving quicker access to Nā Pali than leaving from Port Allen.

The Afternoon Nā Pali Adventure Tour also runs about four hours from Hanalei on a similar vessel. The afternoon trip is designed around the changing light on the cliffs and waterfalls, with a snorkeling stop and cave entry depending on ocean conditions. Both Hanalei trips include lunch, snorkeling gear, and a dry bag for personal belongings.

If you are staying near Hanalei or Princeville, these departures can save you a long drive to the South Shore. Hanalei Charters describes the drive from Princeville or Hanalei to Port Allen as about an hour and a half. That estimate can vary with traffic, so consider the return drive when choosing an afternoon trip.

Want a catamaran, meals, or a longer day?

The Nāpali Coast Snorkel Excursion departs from Port Allen Marina Center aboard Leila, a 50-foot motorized sailing catamaran. It lasts about five hours and includes a captain-selected swim and snorkel stop when conditions permit. Snorkel gear, flotation devices, instruction, and in-water crew support are included, along with continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. Beer, wine, and hard seltzers are served after snorkeling.

For an evening on the water, the Nāpali Sunset Dinner Sail is a 4.5-hour catamaran trip from Port Allen. It includes a buffet dinner, drinks, narration about Kauaʻi’s history and legends, and a champagne toast near Port Allen as daylight fades. The crew may raise the sails when conditions permit. Choose this experience for the coast and dinner, rather than a trip centered on swimming.

If you want to add a farther offshore destination, the Niʻihau and Nāpali Snorkel Expedition is a seven-hour trip from Port Allen aboard a 65-foot power catamaran. It combines Nā Pali sightseeing with a captain-selected snorkeling location near Niʻihau or Lehua Crater, depending on ocean conditions. Breakfast, lunch, snorkel equipment, and in-water support are included. This is the option to consider if you want a full day on the water and the additional offshore route.

For a shorter Port Allen trip on a smaller vessel, the Morning Nā Pali Coast Snorkel Tour runs about four and a half hours aboard a custom-built super raft. It includes a snorkeling stop, gear, light snacks, and nonalcoholic drinks. The operator says to arrive 45 minutes before departure for check-in. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility.

Choose by where you are staying and what you want to do

For North Shore stays, the morning Hanalei tour or the afternoon Hanalei tour avoids the drive to Port Allen. For South Shore stays, the five-hour catamaran snorkel excursion, sunset dinner sail, and Niʻihau and Nāpali expedition all leave from Port Allen. If you prefer a shorter, more active raft outing from that side, consider the morning super raft tour.

Snorkeling, swimming, sea cave entry, and wildlife sightings depend on the day’s conditions. The Hanalei Charters listing also says cave entry and snorkeling are not guaranteed. Choose a tour for its overall coastline experience, and treat water activities as weather-dependent parts of the trip.

Bring a towel, a change of clothes, and sun-protective clothing. The Holo Holo listings also recommend water-resistant clothing and note that towels and a change of clothes are not included. If you are prone to motion sickness, plan ahead before boarding. Arrive at the exact meeting point with time for check-in, especially for tours that require an early arrival.
