Kauai Inland Adventures: Waterfalls, Kayaks, and Off-Road Trails

Kauai’s inland adventures offer a different kind of day from a coastal boat trip. You can paddle a river into a green valley, hike to a waterfall, float through old plantation canals, or explore ranchland by off-road vehicle. The best fit depends on how active you want to be and how much time you want to spend outdoors.

Several of these tours meet around Kapaʻa or Lihue, so it helps to plan by area and choose one main activity for the day. A long paddle and hike can be tiring, while tubing or an off-road trip gives you a different way to experience Kauai’s interior.

For a river paddle and waterfall hike

The Secret Falls Kayak & Hike combines a paddle on the Wailua River with a guided rainforest hike to Uluwehi Falls, also called Secret Falls. The route includes about two miles of paddling and a 1.5-mile hike over uneven, sometimes muddy ground. It is a better fit for guests who are comfortable paddling and walking on a moderate trail. The tour is listed for ages 5 and up.

For a different river and return trip, the Hidden Valley Falls Kayak follows the Huleʻia River. The experience pairs a downwind paddle with a hike to a private waterfall. Instead of paddling back upstream, guests return by motorized Hawaiian canoe. That can make it appealing if you want the river and waterfall scenery without repeating the same paddle in reverse.

For a shorter guided waterfall walk

The Kipu Falls and Treehouse Hike is a two-hour guided walk on private Kipu Ranch land. The 1.5-mile route visits a banyan treehouse and Kīpū Falls, with valley scenery and local stories along the way. Swimming at the waterfall pool depends on weather and water conditions, so bring swimwear if you would like the option. Wear shoes with good tread because the trail can be uneven or muddy.

For a float through plantation canals

The Mountain Tubing Adventure takes about three hours. It follows historic irrigation canals through Kauai’s interior, including five hand-dug tunnels. A tube, headlamp, gloves, and lunch are included. Participants must be at least 5 years old and 43 inches tall. Secure water-friendly shoes are required, so pack footwear that can get wet and stay on your feet.

For an off-road look at ranch country

The Ultimate Ranch Tour is a three-hour off-road trip through Kipu Ranch’s pastures and tropical valley landscapes. The route includes scenic stops and movie locations. It is listed for ages 9 and up. Drivers must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license, and closed-toe shoes are required. This is a good choice if you want to explore the island’s interior without committing to a long hike.

How to choose your Kauai inland adventure

Choose the Secret Falls Kayak & Hike if you want a substantial river paddle followed by a rainforest walk. The Hidden Valley Falls Kayak also combines paddling and hiking, with a motorized canoe ride back. Kipu Falls and Treehouse Hike is the shorter walking option. Mountain tubing is the most relaxed way to travel through the canals, while the Ultimate Ranch Tour adds an off-road ride and ranch scenery.

These activities have different meeting areas, physical demands, and age requirements. Give each one enough time in your itinerary, and leave room for the drive to and from the meeting point. Browse more activities on the Kauai hub at Waikiki Adventures.
