The North Shore hub lists several shark tours, but they do not all work the same way. Some keep guests inside a floating cage, while others offer a cageless snorkel experience with crew in the water. Compare the setup, age or height requirements, and time involved before choosing.
If you prefer a cage
The Shark Dive is a two-hour trip from Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor. The FareHarbor listing says the boat travels three to four miles offshore to a moored cage. Masks and snorkels are provided, and the cage holds up to eight people. Transportation to the harbor is not included, so plan your own ride there.
Another cage option is Shark Cage Diving, also listed as a two-hour experience. No scuba experience is necessary. Guests use a mask and snorkel while viewing sharks from inside a floating cage at the surface. The listing has participant fares for adults and children ages 5 to 12, plus a separate boat-rider option for guests who do not want to swim. It also notes that weather can sometimes require a rescheduled trip.
These cage tours may suit guests who want a barrier between themselves and the sharks while still getting in the water. They are not scuba dives, but the listings describe entering the ocean and using a mask and snorkel.
If you want a cageless experience
The Cage-free Shark Tour is a two-hour snorkel trip from Haleiwa. Masks and fins are included, and the listing describes a crew of experienced watermen and safety divers. The swimmer fare is listed for ages 5 and up, with a ride-along fare for ages 3 and up. A minimum of six guests is required for the tour to operate, which is useful to know when planning for a small group.
The Shark Dive Eco Tour is another cageless option. The FareHarbor listing describes a 90-minute trip guided by marine biologists and crew, with snorkeling gear provided. To participate in the water, guests must be at least 4 feet tall, know how to swim, and have previous snorkel experience. Ride-alongs are available, but swimming and snorkeling are not included for them. For a shared charter, the listing requires at least three guests.
The Pelagic (Cageless) Shark Dive is listed as a two-hour trip for ages 12 to 75. Snorkeling gear is included, and the water portion lasts about 45 minutes. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before departure for check-in, waivers, and gear fitting. The listing gives the meeting point as Haleiwa Road.
A cageless tour puts you in the water without a cage, so the participant requirements matter. The Deep Blue listing specifically requires swimming ability and previous snorkel experience. If those requirements do not fit someone in your group, the ride-along or cage options may be more suitable.
Plan the harbor trip, not just the time in the water
The tours above depart from the North Shore, and transportation is not included in every listing. Allow time to reach the specific meeting point and arrive by the required check-in time. For the Pelagic tour, that means arriving 30 minutes early. For Shark Dive, transportation to Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor is not included.
The listed durations range from 90 minutes to two hours, but the boat ride, check-in, and travel to the harbor also take time. Choose one tour as the main activity for that part of your day, and leave room around it rather than booking another timed activity immediately before or after.
