Intro to Stand-Up Paddleboard
Learn the art of SUP in Oahu
Have you ever wanted to learn to stand-up paddleboard? This Honolulu class is designed for beginners who are interested in learning the proper technique for stand-up paddling (SUP) in one of the most beautiful locations to try out this unique water sport.
We will spend time discussing important safety considerations to ensure a fun, safe experience for everyone.
We will also teach you an efficient forward stroke, as well as how to stop and turn the board, so you can get wherever you want to go with ease.
Mornings are an ideal time to paddle because the winds are generally light, and it’s the best time to spot turtles as we paddle along! You may even want to pair this class with an Oahu SUP yoga class at 9 a.m. to get the full Hawaiian experience.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your class, please inform us 2 hours prior to class so we have time to offer your place to customers on the waitlist. Reimbursements will not be given if you do not show up or for customers who are more than 5 minutes late for class.
Classes run rain or shine, however, in the event of unsafe water conditions (heavy rain, high winds, or lightning), the class will be canceled. We will do our best to reschedule you, but if we are not able to, we will refund you fully. Refunds will be placed back onto the credit card used at the time of purchase. We will notify you via phone or email 30 minutes prior to class in the event of a cancellation.
What should I wear/bring?
Please wear sunscreen and a hat. Wear clothing that you feel comfortable moving and stretching in, and that you are okay with getting wet. Bathing suits and lycra yoga clothes work well. Bring a towel and water bottle for after class. Please do not leave any valuables in your car or on the beach as theft can be a problem.
I’ve never done standup paddling or yoga – is this for me?
Yes! We endeavor to make everyone feel welcome to try SUP yoga. The only thing you need is an open mind. Guests should be comfortable in the water, as falling in is always a possibility, however, we will be in waist-deep water at all times. We strive to make everyone feel comfortable through differentiated instruction – offering variations and modifications for any ability level.
Is there a place to store valuables?
We will have a safe place to store your keys, wallet, or phone. Please avoid bringing unnecessary valuables to the beach.
What about the weather?
Classes run rain or shine, however, in the event of unsafe conditions (heavy rain, high wind, or lightning), the class will be canceled. We will notify you via email or phone 30 minutes prior to class in the event of a cancellation.
How do I get there?
We will meet behind the lifeguard tower 1E at Magic Island. Look for the blue SUP boards in the grass or the big white Yoga Floats van.
Ala Moana is conveniently located 1.5 miles from Waikiki, a short 15-minute drive or 30-45 minute walk. If you are driving, there is ample parking at the beach park. If you are taking public transit, you can take the city bus, the Ala Moana Shopping Trolly, or an Uber ride.
Bus: One-way fare is $2.50. Busses run from 6 am-10 pm, 7 days a week. Click here for more information.
Ala Moana Shopping Trolly: Please do not take the trolly for the morning classes as it doesn’t start operating until 9:30 am. The trolly provides convenient transportation between Ala Moana Shopping Center and 15 locations in Waikiki. It runs every 10-12 minutes, from 9:30 am – 8 pm. Look for the Pink Line trolleys throughout Waikiki. The cost is $2.00 each way. Please pay the fare with exact change on the trolley. For more information, click here.
Uber: A ride from Waikiki will take about ten minutes and cost around $7-$10.
Can I get a photo?
Absolutely! Our instructors will have waterproof cameras on the water and will be snapping a few photos during the class. Photos are free, we just ask you to tag Yoga Floats on any social media.
How many people are in a class?
We have a maximum class size of 10 people. If a class is full, you may place your name on the waitlist and we will contact you in the event of a cancellation.
Is it safe?
Yes! Safety is our top priority at all times. We pay close attention to the weather and only run classes if conditions are safe. All boards will be anchored during class so we don’t have to worry about floating away. Our classes take place less than 100 feet from shore at a lifeguarded beach, in water that is about waist-deep.
How did you decide on the location?
Ala Moana Beach Park is an ideal location for SUP yoga. The water is generally calm and protected from wind and waves, and the sandy shore makes getting in and out of the water with the boards quite easy. Yoga Floats has obtained a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources (permit number CO026407) allowing us to operate our business on the water next to Magic Island.
