Things to Do in Waikiki: Where the Beach Meets the City
Waikiki is one of those places where you can step out of your hotel and immediately feel like your Hawaii vacation has started. The beach, restaurants, shops, and activities are all packed into a relatively small area, which makes it especially convenient when you want to spend less time getting around and more time enjoying yourself.
The famous stretch of Waikiki Beach is an obvious place to start, but I think the best way to experience the area is to mix beach time with an activity or two. You can try surfing, get out on an outrigger canoe, snorkel along the coast, or take a catamaran cruise. There is something satisfying about spending the morning in the water and still being close enough to walk back for lunch afterward.
Waikiki is also a good base if you want to see more of Oahu. Diamond Head is nearby, and tours heading toward the North Shore, Pearl Harbor, and other parts of the island can easily become part of your stay. You do not have to choose between having a convenient place to stay and exploring beyond Honolulu.
One piece of advice I would give first-time visitors is not to overplan Waikiki. Leave yourself a few open hours to walk along the beach, explore the surrounding streets, or sit somewhere and watch the sunset. Because so much is within reach, some of the nicest parts of a Waikiki day happen when you are not trying to get somewhere else.
